ABOUT ICON BUSINESS ADVISORS

Built by operators. For operators.

We’ve made payroll. We’ve lost sleep. We’ve built, bought, and sold businesses. Now we help owners navigate the biggest financial event of their lives.

Built by Operators. For Operators.

Icon Business Advisors was founded on a simple observation: lower middle market business owners are systematically underserved.

Business brokers treat them like a listing. Investment banks won’t return their calls. We built Icon to fill that gap, bringing PE-grade execution with operator credibility.

Why I Started Icon

By Daniel Askew, Founder & CEO

I’ve spent 25 years building, buying, and selling businesses. I’ve made payroll when the account was empty. I’ve lost sleep over decisions that felt impossible. I’ve felt the loneliness that comes with being the one everyone looks to for answers.

When it came time to think about my own exit, I looked for help. What I found was frustrating. Brokers who wanted to list my business like a house. Investment banks who wouldn’t return my call because I “wasn’t big enough.” Consultants with MBAs who were brilliant, but had never actually built anything.

I realized there was a gap. Business owners like us deserve better than being treated like a small transaction or told we’re not important enough. Someone needs to help Founders convert their work into legacy. Wealth creation events are the reason we sacrifice years of hard work and stress.

That’s why I started Icon. We bring institutional-quality advice with operator credibility. We’ve actually done this. We know what it feels like.

The Founders

Daniel Askew – Founder & CEO

Daniel is a Nashville native with 25+ years of experience building, buying, and selling businesses. He drove more than $450 million in real estate transactions and built a portfolio of companies that landed on the INC 500 list at #118, the fastest-growing private companies in America.

As a serial entrepreneur and co-founder of companies spanning fleet infrastructure, fintech, and AI, Daniel doesn’t advise from the sideline. He’s made payroll, navigated failed partnerships, pivoted at 2am, and built businesses that worked and a few that didn’t. That operating experience is the foundation of everything Icon does.

Daniel lives in Nashville with his wife Rachel and their two sons, Charlie and Peyton.

Rachel Askew – Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer

Operating at the intersection of product, operations, and growth, where healthcare companies either scale or stall.

Rachel Askew is the COO of Icon, an Operating Partner for the portfolio companies and transformation leader with 25+ years of experience driving value creation across healthcare, life sciences, and private equity-backed organizations. She partners with executive teams and investors to translate strategy into scalable execution, aligning product strategy, operations, and go-to-market to accelerate growth and improve performance.

Her work spans healthcare services, digital health, AI-enabled platforms, and life sciences. Rachel brings deep expertise in product management, commercialization, operating model design, change leadership, and value creation planning. She has led large-scale transformation and growth initiatives across complex multi-billion dollar healthcare organizations, consistently delivering measurable outcomes including margin improvement, revenue growth, and operational efficiency.

Rachel holds an MBA from Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee.

At Icon, Rachel leads the consulting practice and oversees client engagement delivery. She works with a select number of companies and private equity firms where there is clear opportunity to build, scale, and create long-term enterprise value. Thinking about how to accelerate growth, improve execution, or build something that lasts? That’s the conversation we want to have.

What We Believe

Founder-First
We prioritize client goals above our own. Your success is our success.

Skin in the Game
We earn equity and revenue share because we believe in what we build together.

Operators, Not Just Consultants
We’ve built, scaled, and exited businesses. We give real insights, not textbook advice.

Execution Over Ego
Results matter more than looking smart. We roll up our sleeves.

Real Relationships
We build long-term partnerships, wealth creation events are only the by-product.

How We Work With Clients

Every client relationship starts with a conversation and grows from there. You engage with Icon at the level that makes sense for where you are today:

Know Your Number
Start with a free valuation snapshot or a professional valuation report to understand where your business stands. Most owners are surprised, in both directions.

Build the Plan
Our Icon Command value sprint delivers a complete strategic business plan, marketing plan, and financial model specification in days, not months. This is the foundation for every smart exit, raise, or growth phase.

Get Strategic Support
Icon Partner provides fractional executive leadership, equity-based operating partnerships, and management consulting with skin in the game. For owners who need an operator in their corner, not another consultant with a slide deck.

Execute the Transaction
When you’re ready, Icon Exit runs the full sell-side M&A process and Icon Capital helps you raise growth capital on your terms. Icon Deal Flow serves buyers looking for off-market acquisitions.

Build it right. Sell it right. Live the life you’ve earned.

What Clients Say

“I talked to three M&A firms before Icon. Two of them had never run a business. Daniel’s team had actually been through what I was going through – the sleepless nights, the worry about my employees, the fear of leaving money on the table. That mattered more than any credential on a wall.”
– Mike R., Founder | Services Company | Nashville, TN

“I spent a few hundred dollars on a valuation snapshot and it changed my entire exit timeline. I thought my business was worth far less than it actually was. That one conversation with Icon was the most valuable investment I’ve made in understanding my own company.”
– Robert K., Owner | Professional Services | Nashville, TN

“We were stuck at a revenue ceiling for two years. Icon didn’t just tell us what was wrong – they rolled up their sleeves and helped us fix it. Within 14 months, we’d restructured operations, hired a real management team, and grown revenue by 40%. They operate like partners, not consultants.”
– James T., CEO | Logistics & Distribution | Southeast

“Daniel’s team found buyers I didn’t know existed. The competitive process they ran resulted in six offers and a final price that was $3.4 million above the only offer I had before engaging Icon. The process was professional, confidential, and moved faster than I expected.”
– Sandra L., Former Owner | Healthcare Staffing | Nashville, TN

“The Icon Command sprint gave me more clarity in 72 hours than I’d gotten from two years of trying to figure it out on my own. I finally had a real plan, not a generic template, but a roadmap built around my specific business and my specific goals. Worth every penny.”
– Karen W., Owner | Accounting Practice | Chattanooga, TN

Client Results

Names and identifying details have been changed to protect client confidentiality. The outcomes are real.

Sell-Side M&A – Healthcare Services Company, Nashville, TN

A 22-year-old healthcare staffing firm generating $14M in revenue and $1.8M in EBITDA. The owner was 58, had no succession plan, and had been approached by a single buyer who offered 3.2x EBITDA. Icon ran a full sell-side process: financial recast, confidential buyer outreach to 47 qualified acquirers, and a competitive bidding process that produced six LOIs. The owner closed at 5.1x EBITDA, $3.4 million more than the original unsolicited offer. The entire process took 7 months from engagement to close.

Key takeaway: One buyer is never enough. A structured process creates competition, and competition drives price.

Capital Raise – Technology Platform, Southeast

An early-stage SaaS company with $800K ARR and a strong product-market fit needed $2M to fund the next phase of growth. The founders had spent 4 months reaching out to investors on their own with no traction. Icon restructured the narrative, rebuilt the financial model to highlight unit economics, curated a target list of 30 aligned investors, and managed the entire outreach process. The company closed a $2.4M round in 10 weeks with two strategic angel investors and a regional family office.

Key takeaway: Capital raising is a sales process. Most founders are great at building but need help packaging the story for investors.

Exit Preparation + Value Enhancement – Construction & Trades Company, Middle Tennessee

A commercial contractor generating $9M in revenue with strong margins but significant owner dependence. Icon embedded as a fractional COO for 14 months: built out a second-in-command, documented all operational workflows, diversified the customer base from 40% concentration to under 15%, and implemented financial reporting that buyers expect. The business went to market 18 months later and sold at 4.8x EBITDA, a multiple the owner was told was “unrealistic” before the engagement started.

Key takeaway: The 12 to 18 months before you sell are the highest-ROI investment you’ll ever make. Preparation is where value is created.

Icon Command Sprint – Professional Services Firm, Chattanooga, TN

A 15-person accounting practice generating $3.2M in revenue. The owner was 3 years from retirement and had no exit strategy, no documented valuation, and no marketing beyond word of mouth. Icon Command delivered a complete strategic business plan, marketing plan, and financial model specification in 72 hours. The valuation came back at $2.1M enterprise value, with a clear roadmap showing how 18 months of preparation could push that above $3M.

Key takeaway: Clarity is the first step. Most owners don’t need to sell today. They need to know where they stand and what’s possible.

Operating Partnership – Logistics Company, Southeast

A founder with a $6M logistics business and a strong sales engine but no operational infrastructure. Icon entered as an operating partner with equity and a monthly retainer. Over 18 months, we installed a COO-level operational framework, built a management layer, implemented the technology stack, and repositioned the company for scale. Revenue grew to $11M and EBITDA margins improved from 8% to 16%. The company is now positioned for a strategic acquisition at a premium multiple.

Key takeaway: Some businesses don’t need to be sold. They need to be built properly first. An operating partner with skin in the game changes the trajectory.
